The Importance of Seeking a Second Opinion in Mental Health & Addiction TreatmentWhen facing complex medical decisions—especially regarding mental health and addiction treatment—seeking a second opinion can be a crucial step and tool to ensure the best possible care. A second opinion can help to better confirm a diagnosis, explore alternative treatments, and provide peace of mind before making major choices or when you are not reaching your treatment goals.

Dr. Matthew Goldenberg, D.O., specializes in independent and individualized second opinions for individuals and families navigating psychiatric and addiction-related concerns. His goal is to offer evidence-based guidance and unbiased recommendations so you can make informed decisions about your health and most effectively reach your goals.

Why Consider a Second Opinion?

  1. Confirming a Diagnosis – Misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis in mental health and addiction is common. A second opinion helps validate your diagnosis and ensures appropriate treatment.
  2. Exploring All Treatment Options – Alternative therapies, medication adjustments, or lifestyle interventions may offer better results than initially recommended treatments.
  3. Avoiding Unnecessary Treatments – Some individuals are prescribed medications or therapies they may not need or no longer need to continue. A second opinion can prevent unnecessary risks and help to decrease medication reliance.
  4. Providing Clarity & Confidence – Having an independent expert review your case can provide peace of mind before committing to a treatment plan.
  5. Addressing Concerns About a Current Provider – If you feel unheard, rushed, or dissatisfied with your current provider, or simply feel stuck and no longer making progress, a second opinion can offer reassurance and/or suggest alternatives without any commitment to change course.
